Six avid Bass fishermen
came together and formed "The St. Joe Valley Bassmasters Club" in the
spring of 1972.
Our club was
instrumental in helping make Potato Creek’s Lake Webster what it is
today. We planted hundreds of tires tied with nylon to set into the lake
prior to its flooding in below zero temperatures on a January day. This
is now used as structure for all types of fish.
Our club was also the
first to start and continue to hold a Youth Tournament each summer at
Potato Creek State
Park. This is open to all boys and girls age 4 - 14.
Numerous members have
participated in the Bassmasters National Tournament, and have won honors
and cash. Participants have included Don Rank, Quinn Kreiger, and Tex
Galloway. One of our past members, Jeff VanDeKeere, represented our club
by qualifying for the National Federation Tournament.
Most of our members
have never reached these heights, but have participated and learned a
great deal from other members on how and where to catch bass. Also a
majority of our members were not bass fisherman when they joined.
Some of our family fun
is with the husband and wife tournament as well as at the end of the
season an Awards Banquet.
Our club holds from 6
to 8 tournaments per year as well as our three day club classic at the
end of the year. We start fishing in April and finish in October. It is
not necessary to own a bass boat to belong to a bass club or be a
accomplished bass fisherman. An interest in bass fishing and desire to
fish and participate in club functions is all that is needed. Members'
ages are from 16 to 70+, so age is not important, but only the desire.
Our meeting's are held
on the first Sunday of every month at 7:00 p.m.
